About Drinking Water Testing (IS 10500)

Drinking water safety in India is defined by IS 10500:2012, which sets acceptable and permissible limits across physical, chemical and microbiological parameters — and a single non-compliant parameter can make otherwise clear water unsafe. CVR Labs runs the complete IS 10500 panel on municipal, borewell, RO, tanker and stored water: pH, turbidity, TDS, hardness and alkalinity; fluoride, nitrate, chloride and sulphate; heavy metals; and the coliform and E. coli tests that confirm microbiological safety.

We pay particular attention to the parameters that fail most often in Indian supply — fluoride and nitrate in borewells, hardness and TDS in groundwater, and coliforms where storage or distribution is poor — and report each against its IS 10500 acceptable and permissible value. Sampling guidance is provided so the sample that reaches the lab still represents the tap.

What we analyse under Drinking Water Testing (IS 10500)

The parameter groups below are drawn from this service's own accredited scope; the full searchable list follows.

Borewells fail on fluoride and nitrate

Across much of India groundwater exceeds the IS 10500 fluoride and nitrate limits — invisible, but a real health risk that only testing reveals.

Microbiology is the acute risk

Coliforms and E. coli signal faecal contamination and immediate illness risk; their absence is the core test of potability.

One bad parameter fails the water

IS 10500 is pass/fail per parameter — clear, good-tasting water can still breach a metal, fluoride or bacterial limit.

FAQ

Drinking Water Testing (IS 10500) — frequently asked questions

Is Drinking Water Testing (IS 10500) NABL-accredited at CVR Labs?
Yes. Drinking Water Testing (IS 10500) is performed under CVR Labs' NABL ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation (Cert. NABLT0626TN18226) at our Chennai laboratory, with traceable, audit-ready reports accepted for compliance and submission.
What standard do you test drinking water against?
Drinking water is tested against IS 10500:2012, covering physical, chemical and microbiological parameters with their acceptable and permissible limits.
My borewell water looks clear — is testing still needed?
Yes. Clarity does not indicate safety. Borewells commonly exceed fluoride, nitrate, hardness or TDS limits and may carry bacterial contamination, none of which is visible.
How should I collect a drinking-water sample?
Use a clean container for chemical analysis and a separate sterile bottle for microbiology, keep cool and deliver within 24 hours; we provide detailed sampling guidance.
What samples do you accept for Drinking Water Testing (IS 10500)?
We routinely handle Municipal supply, borewell, RO, tanker & stored drinking water. Share your exact sample type and target standard and our technical team will confirm the required quantity, method and turnaround.
What parameters are included in Drinking Water Testing (IS 10500)?
The Drinking Water Testing (IS 10500) panel covers 180 accredited parameters spanning physical, chemical, heavy-metal, pesticide, organic and microbiological tests. The full searchable list is on this page — tell us your target and we'll map the right sub-panel for your sample.
